Phenomenal Woman by Dr. Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

"Who Am I?"

Who am I?
My first answer would probably be my name.
But, my name does not describe who I am on the inside.
I could then give the title of my profession.
But that is what I do.
I could then tell you I am a wife, a sister, and a daughter.
But those are my relationships.
I ask again, who am I?
I could describe myself as an extrovert and outgoing.
That is my personality.
I am organized in planning events.
But that is a gift God has given me.
I could describe my appearance, but that is not who I am either.
So many times I have believed what others say I am.
If I receive affirmation, then I feel worthwhile.
However, when I receive criticism, then I feel like a failure.
I have chosen to ride the roller coaster of emotions,
Instead of believing the truth of what God says about me.
I have tried to work harder to prove that I am worthwhile.
Yet every time I mess up or fail, I am reminded that I will never measure up.
I will never be pretty enough or talented enough.
I will never be skinny enough or do enough good things of the church.
I will never be a good enough wife or sister or daughter.
But, I keep trying harder and harder.
I believe the lie that if I continue to try harder, I will finally be "good" enough.
One day, God gently said to me,
"Stop trying so hard to prove yourself to others.
Get your worth from me. I've already given it to you.
Remember my grace.
It's a free gift and nothing you can achieve by trying harder.

Rest in my grace.
You are working so hard to have a certain position in the eyes of others,
To be well-liked and to have popularity.
You want to be appreciated for what you do.

But I want you to know that you already have an elevated position.
Because you have a relationship with my son, Jesus Christ,
You are a part of my kingdom as my daughter, and co-heirs with Christ.
Because you are the daughter of a King,
You are given the position of being a princess.

You are my princess, a royal princess.
Remember that an earthly princess is not special because of who she is or what she does.
She has status and position because of who her dad is, a king.
She has royalty in her blood.
You have royalty in your blood as well.
You are the daughter of a King.
And no matter what you do, your status will never change.
I have chosen you and I have a plan for your life.
I will not forget you and will be with you always.
I have engraved you in the palm of my hands.
Rest in the knowledge of who you are in me.
Nothing else will ever be enough.
You are my daughter and I love you!"

"Why are women so much more self-critical than men? Because women are judged on their appearance more than men, and standards of female beauty are considerably higher and more inflexible. Women are continually bombarded with images of the 'ideal' face and figure – what Naomi Woolf calls 'The Official Body'. Constant exposure to idealised images of female beauty on TV, magazines and billboards makes exceptional good looks seem normal and anything short of perfection seem abnormal and ugly. It has been estimated that young women now see more images of outstandingly beautiful women in one day than our mothers saw throughout their entire adolescence."

"Step Away from the Mean Girls… and say bye-bye to feeling bad about your looks. Are you ready to stop colluding with a culture that makes so many of us feel physically inadequate? Say goodbye to your inner critic, and take this pledge to be kinder to yourself and others. This is a call to arms. A call to be gentle, to be forgiving, to be generous with yourself. The next time you look into the mirror, try to let go of the story line that says you're too fat or too sallow, too ashy or too old, your eyes are too small or your nose too big; just look into the mirror and see your face. When the criticism drops away, what you will see then is just you, without judgment, and that is the first step toward transforming your experience of the world" Oprah Winfrey.

"Even though there is a day designated in the year called “Love Your Body Day,” I believe that we (girls and women) must celebrate our bodies every day. Due to societal pressures and gender socialization, insecurity about our bodies will cross our paths, but we do not need to conform to society’s demands. We must love each and every part of our bodies and always acknowledge the uniqueness in our bodies and how blessed we are to be in our own skin. Loving our bodies is essential, but it is also important for us to let other girls and women know how beautiful they are. You never how much of a positive impact it can make on another, especially if you do not know their personal struggles."

We must never put ourselves or remain in circumstances that causes abuse or any form of harm to our bodies, whether verbally, emotionally, physically, or psychologically. Also, we must know when things are right and wrong about our bodies at all times in order to be body confident; therefore, we must take necessary steps such as having a mammogram, visiting our gynecologists, doing physical check-ups, etc. Our health is not only our strength but our wealth. Additionally, we do so much for our family, community, and friends, but now we need to start thinking about ourselves and living each day happily and stress-free in our beautiful bodies and remain empowered" Ruby B. Spiritual wellness is the quest for meaning, value, and purpose which results to hope, joy, courage, and gratitude. To be spiritually-well means for one to be able to find peace and balance in their life in which their values and ethics match their actions.  Spiritual wellness involves self-evaluation of personal beliefs.  It is learning to trust your intuition and gain strength and energy from your surroundings. Listen to your inner voice. Being well spiritually can be accomplished by: paying attention to your feelings, emotions, and thoughts; trusting your intuition and letting your inner voice often help you find your direction; understanding your beliefs, why you have them, and why you value them; and more importantly, continuing to seek purpose in your life.

Body Image Poem
by Kaiz Alarakyia

That’s not me, the mirror says,
What happened to the skinny girl those other days?
Eat less, throw it up, eat even less,
Don’t ever tell anyone, don’t ever confess
Those jeans don’t fit, I’m still too fat
“Anorexia?” No no it’s not that!
It’s okay the models do it!
I’m still not like them who can I kid?
Eat less, throw it up, Eat even less,
Don’t ever tell anyone, not until death.

When friends or my boyfriend tell me I'm beautiful, I feel good. Beauty is whatever is physically appealing, but that of course varies greatly.

Dressing up, doing my makeup, and exercising are what make me beautiful.

My friends and boyfriend are who make me feel beautiful.

Inner beauty is being nice and charming, but most of all, being genuine and not stabbing people in the back.
Outer beauty is being physically appealing for a given person.

A Body Image Poem
By Margarita Tartakovsky

My legs have stories to tell.
When I was a little girl,
they pushed me down the mini snow-covered hills
in my sled,
outside my home in Moscow.
They wobbled and swayed
as my dad played his bayan.
I can still feel that joy.
They helped me peddle
through the streets of an Italian city.
My bike found in the trash, and
brought back to life by my cousins.
Throughout the years, they’ve moved
to the tune of moody music
and fast tracks.
They’ve walked, for hours,
through the streets of Brooklyn,
my late grandma and I side-by-side,
gabbing, gossiping and giggling.
They strolled along museums, galleries
big and small, and
in Central Park
in awe.
My legs have hiked,
run when I didn’t think I could and
tried to conquer the bunny slope one winter at the Poconos.
(That thing is hard!)
They let me live out my ballerina dreams,
one pointed toe at a time.
They’ve shopped ’til we dropped
with my mom.
They’ve propelled me
higher and higher on the swings,
one of my favorite childhood pastimes.
When I truly felt free and fearless.
My arms have stories to tell, too.
They’ve hugged loved ones.
Held new life.
Someday hoping to hold my own.
They’ve cuddled my 16-year-old kitty.
They’ve curled weights and made me feel strong.
They’ve helped my kayak glide
through the bright blue waters of the Caribbean.
My hands have stories to tell, too.
My hands have held an apple as I chomped with pure glee.
Or a spoon as I’ve chomped on chocolate chip ice cream
or a chewy, gooey brownie,
finally without shame, guilt or desperation.
My hands have cupped my boyfriend’s face
as we’re kissing.
My hands have written silly stories
and become vehicles for my passion.
They’ve thumbed through pages
of old, dusty books
in different cities.
My body has stories to tell,
and I want to hear them.
Instead of letting diets,
dull dreams,
destructive expectations
and the outside world
shut my body up.
Every day,
I work
to shut them out.
My body has stories to tell,
and I want to hear them.
Let yours speak, too.

Ruby's dream

This was published a year ago on Ruby's blog, and she will like to share it with you all.
--
Yes, Dr. King had a wonderful dream also which fortunately is coming true! But the dream I'm talking about is different. My dream is for every girl and woman to always look at the mirror and love what they see no matter their size, complexion, etc.

I just got off the phone with my friend, and we were having a regular conversation while I had just finished eating a late dinner, and he asked me what I was doing. I told him that I was about to have some ice cream for dessert and he said that I shouldn't, and I asked him why, and he told me that I'll get fat. I wasn't upset by his comment, but just replied to him that I'm okay with that and that there's nothing wrong with that. He responded saying that "Well you'll be big and lose your figure and have a big butt." Honestly, the things he said in no way sounded bad to me at all, because being curvaceous is absolutely gorgeous in my standards, and I really do not see the bad in having a big butt. I come from a continent (Africa) that having curves and a big butt is a hott commodity, so I told him that his comments rather make me motivated to eat more rather than isolating myself from having such a creamy delight (Dane Cook fans will get that joke). I find it intriguing that in Western cultures that the norm of girls or women's beauty is "thin, tall and medium-sized breasts" whereby in Africa, beauty can be fat, voluptuous, curvaceous, thin and so much more variety. In fact, some women are insulted if told they look thin because it is sometimes assumed that they are hungry and malnourished. As much as it may sound like a myth to the Western world, fat is beautiful, respected and powerful in Africa, and I am sure that there are other places like that out there.

So now that I've given you some background, back to my dream. I dream of the day that ALL girls and women would really and truly love their bodies. Stand naked in front of the mirror and take a great look at themselves and see their outer beauty, embrace each and every curve, muffin top, stretch marks, wrinkle, etc. In the movie, Phat Girlz with Mo'Nique, I loved the scene where Mo'Nique's character did such a thing in front of the mirror. I want girls and women to be cautious of food for the purpose of being healthy and fit and not for the purpose of looking like a so-called model or actress. In my opinion, it does not make sense when some girls and women say that "Oh I'm on a diet because I want to look like this woman or that girl and that they are so thin and beautiful." In a statement like that there's a right and wrong involved. The right is, being thin is beautiful and hott. But the wrong is that being thin is not the ultimate definition of beauty, fat is also beautiful, hott, sexy, gorgeous, and whatever synonyms there are out there. I googled beautiful while writing this entry and the first about four or five pages that came up were of several thin women and there was no variety whatsoever in the looks of the women, just many women with thin waists and big plastic surgery breasts. I'm supportive of plastic surgery (reconstructive that is) but I believe that cosmetic plastic surgery wouldn't be existent if society was more indulging to variety in women's bodies and not have one idealized beauty.

Society must come to realize that they cannot conceptualize girls and women's bodies and that everyone does not look the same and SHOULD NOT look the same. I appreciate diversity in women's bodies and it's a pity that there are so many pressures on women and girls in society whereby they are constantly scrutinized for not having "the body." Honestly, the world would be boring as heck if we all looked the same, and this is why I believe that first every woman and girl must love what they look like and whenever they look at the mirror their comment should be "Dang, I look good and I feel amazing!!!" no matter how big or small they are, because what really should matter is their health and fitness.

It really baffles me when a girl or woman is complimented for being skinny, she completely lights up but when she's told she looks fat, oh my goodness darkness and disappointment is read all over her face. When told they are fat, some even feel on themselves to start making excuses such as "Yea, it's coz I'm on my period"..."Yea this dress makes me look fat," ... "Yea it's coz I just ate" etc. Well news flash, you're supposed to eat everyday and not just one meal a day...also as a woman, period is part of our anatomy, so do not blame it on that...and don't blame it on a dress, because it only accentuates what it's on, which is your gorgeous fat body. Also, I believe that society (men and boys and also women) must not criticize other women and girls for what they look like, and the created norm (thin or skinny) of beauty must vanish.

So, I have a dream that one day every girl and woman would appreciate their big or small thighs, big or small hips, big or small breasts, big or small arms, short or long legs and other big or small parts that make up the human body. I want every woman to look into the mirror every day, take a look at themselves from head to toe, put on a great smile and blow themselves a kiss.

Nisa Misan J. Harper

Age: Proud 36 years old!

#1. My skin color glows, my skin is beautiful, I used to use Ambi as a young girl on my face, (not just on blemishes, but on my face). Somewhere, somehow, I picked up a message that said "my brown wasn't good enough".  I have since left that message in the trash. My brown is perfect as is!

#2. My lips, my full African lips, they are wide and thick. They look good in lip gloss, they are perfectly mine.

#3. My eyes, they shine, they sparkle, they are expressive, they look even better with the right colors of makeup for my brown skin!

I finally, finally LOVE MY BODY, it took disliking it and trying to change it, for me to figure that out. The days I'm dissatisfied with my body, I verbally affirm myself back to my perfection. I and every other female is perfectly made in our own image. There is no need to mess with PERFECTION! Round, Tan, Brown, Black, Vanilla, Thin, full lips, thin lips, small eyes, green eyes, dark brown eyes, blemishes, big butt, no butt, thin legs, thick frame , rail thin, LOVE THE SKIN AND BODY YOU’RE IN, YOU’RE PERFECT!

Love Your Body Day is "a day of action to speak out against ads and images of women that are offensive, dangerous and disrespectful."

When You Believe Foundation, Inc. is actively raising awareness towards and after this day about beauty ideals, body image, self-esteem, etc. Fill out this survey that is currently being conducted in order to help us get better assessment of personal and public opinions.

To continue this Campaign, WYBF is launching a platform with the same mission called Body Confident, Beautiful Me: A Love Your Body Campaign.
